POSITION SUMMARY


The overall role of the Director of Public Funding position is to grow public funding revenue by identifying, securing, and stewarding grant and contract opportunities for Fountain House from new public funding sources, and to strengthen current relationships. This position will cultivate relationships with public funders (city, state, and federal government) and other external partners to build support for Fountain House and its mission to help people living with serious mental illness overcome social isolation and build the community and the resilience needed to thrive in society. 


High-level responsibilities of the position

Fountain House needs an experienced development professional with a high-level understanding of the public funding landscape to create and implement a strategic development plan that focuses on significantly growing the public funding (City, State, and federal) revenue at Fountain House. 

  • The Director of Public Funding will report to and work closely with the Senior Director of Institutional Giving to identify and secure new sources of government funding. 
  • Create and execute an annual fundraising plan for public funding assessing progress towards goals and making strategic shifts on an ongoing basis.  

Provide support and coaching in fundraising to staff members/ Grant Writers to achieve the agency's fundraising goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning

  • Research and develop an understanding of when relevant government funding opportunities will be released to create a process that will enable Fountain House to be prepared for these opportunities. 
  • Identify various types of public funding opportunities that are fit for Fountain House’s work including in areas of direct service, mental health, research, and other programming and strategic pillar fits.  

Prospecting, Cultivation, Stewardship

  • Maintain an existing portfolio of more than $22M in local and city government funding, while researching and responding to new opportunities for city, state, and federal funding that align with the agency's mission, goals, and existing programs. 
  • Coordinate application submission process in collaboration with grant writers, development team, and other departments external to development, including budgets and financial requirements. 
  • Supervise a Grant Writer creating goals and work plans that are in alignment with the annual fundraising plan. 
  • In coordination with grant writers, ensure that the production and submission of all external funder communications (Grant proposals, grant reports, etc.) are of exceptional quality and persuasive to funders. (This position will require the Director to both coordinate and participate in the writing process; therefore, an individual must possess strong writing skills.)  
  • Analyze and assess qualified prospects to determine which opportunities to pursue. This includes creating profiles of RFPs that provide a high-level summary of the funding opportunities to be shared with other departments actively involved in determining whether to move forward with the application process.  

Data and Process Management/Administrative

  • Manage all renewals of current government grants in coordination with the grant writer.  
  • Record and track all activity and progress in Salesforce database, including prospecting, moves management, pipeline of opportunities/deliverables, grant management/admin/filing, etc. 
  • Maintain and regularly update the calendar of government deadlines (i.e., due dates for grant applications, reports, concept papers, etc.) in Salesforce database. 
  • Ensure contract compliance and complete all required grant reporting, including narrative and financial reports, working with program, research, finance, and other staff to ensure timely submission 

Other duties

  • Contribute to the Development/Fundraising Strategic Plan and strategic planning process. 
  • Schedule, coordinate, and lead site visits with government prospects and partners 
  • Host/attend meetings and events and develop/deliver presentations with government prospects and funders.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor. 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong written communication skills, presentation skills, analytical skills, and the ability to create excellent content and persuasive narratives, including a proven track record of success writing winning proposals with state or federal agencies. 
  • Ability to inspire others with respect to the agency's mission, vision, & values, commitment to equity and social justice, and intersectional work. 
  • Knowledgeable in government contract application submissions, with impeccable attention to detail. 
  • Extensive project management experience with a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines under high-pressure situations. 
  • Experience in creating annual fundraising plans, and leading and motivating fundraising teams to execute projects. 
  • Experience in donor databases, such as Salesforce or similar CRM, as well as Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook, etc.) and internet research and prospecting skills. 
  • Experience with, and/or knowledge of, the public health, social justice, and mental health fields 

REQUIRED AND PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CREDENTIALS

  • Undergraduate degree required.  
  • 5-7 years’ experience in nonprofit fundraising with a focus on government grants fundraising at agencies with organizational budgets greater than $10,000,000, or comparable experience in growing and diversifying government revenue sources. Specifically, experience in grant writing, grant management, or related work within the field of nonprofit development/communication.      
  • Demonstrated success in securing public funding grants from city, state, or federal funding opportunities. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • To perform the essential job functions consistently safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards. 
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards.
